Default Casting

I had some tuition a few weeks ago and I've had three sessions that have been successful from a casting point of view, but I went out today and its gone,I just could'nt get a cast right,no sort of distance and the line just kept ending up in a loop when on the water.Does this happen to other anglers?

Were you using the same rod and line that you were taught with ?
Or are you on completely different kit

Yes,same rod and line that I used for the tuition and my first three sessions on the water, everything was going smoothly until today. It was like I'd never held a rod or made a cast before.

That's very strange Novice, I would have thought after three lessons you would have at least logged something in the old memory bank.
What do you mean the line keeps ending up in a large loop on the water ?
Its not riddled with memory coils is it ?
Were you in a windy situation today, did you check behind on the back cast to see when your line was ready for the forward cast etc. ?

You are probably trying to hard. Try and relax, Measure out 10yrds and work with that without trying to extend line till the rhythm comes back.

Sorry for any misunderstanding MrTrout,I only had the one lesson and then went fishing on my own on three occasions prior to today and like I said things were going well until today. The line today was dropping on the water in a snake like fashion and there was no wind at all.

You might have hit the nail on the head there,I was getting a bit frustrated and like you say probably trying to hard. After I'd tackled down I went round to the other side of the reservoir and watched a bloke for a half hour and every cast he made looked smooth and relaxed.I was waving the rod around like a windscreen wiper today

At the top of the backcast stop and check where your thumb is pointing ,it should be roughly pointing straight up with no wrist break, wrist break causes wide open loops that land in a heap.
also as others have said take it nice and easy

With you now Novice.
Try as Jim says, only put a small amount of line out and work on that, you are probably trying too hard.
It takes a while to become proficient at casting long distances, and it's not always needed, half the time most fish are caught close in.
Do watch your back cast though, it is I think VERY important to see what is happening behind you, until you acquire that feel of knowing where your line is.
Good luck.

Using a floating line, set up your rod and pull enough line through the rod tip until you find where the head section on that particular line tapers off into the running line, that's the thin section.
Mark where the head section meets the running line with a permanent black marker pen.
Now raise the rod upright and pull the line toward you through the tip ring until that area marked is about a foot or so from the rod tip, that's inside the rings, perhaps the third ring from the tip.
Now grip the line in your left hand, and I'm presuming your right-handed here, and mark the area(fly line) you are gripping with your left-hand with the same ink marker.

Now try casting, always keeping MARKED area where the head section meets the running line within the rod rings until the final shoot forward.

Sounds as if you're trying to cast "off" the running line, but it could be many things.
There will be 100's better qualified than me to answer your question, but it's very difficult to help without actually seeing you cast. If you have a video recored, ask someone to record your casting action then place the YOU TUBE URL on here. You'll get your solution real quick.
