Default Litter louts

I've been to various pools of late, where I can't imagine anyone but anglers would set foot, to find crisp packets, lager cans, even Tesco bags full of sandwich wrappers, and the like. And it depresses and angers me in equal measure that idiots would dump their rubbish on otherwise pristine patches of river rather than take it home and either recycle or dump it.
What's your experience?

On a river I fish, the anglers removed 5 shopping trolleys, 2 prams and lost count at 500 plastic bottles, and filled countless bin liners with plastic bags and other rubbish.

It's something I can't stand, but it just reflects an aspect of society that people no longer take responsibility for their actions and expect everthing to be done for them. That includes cleaning up after yourself......

totally agree with you on this one,the banks on the ribble where i fish are pristene at the moment it is absolutely georgous, and now that i have been a few times i have removed most of the 20lb line from in the water,
but sadly it wont last long, come june 16 it will look like a dump with as you said lager cans, old chairs, brolleys and left over disposable barbiques,

it is sickening to see

I find the constant pesence of litter on some of the places I fish to be depressing and upsetting. It tells me that people do not value these places in the same way that I do.

Hi', Aiden. Words almost fail me when I see some of the rubbish that is left by rivers, lakes etc. Have even seen the odd drink can in a couple of our hill tarns.
Last Saturday morning, here in Penrith, I was one of a party of about 20-plus volunteers who spent about 2 hours picking up litter from our town centre. Three of us together, near a local school and its playing field, plus a BMX bike and skate-board area, picked up 7 full bin bags of trash. It's time we had a warden or two out and about, no identification, snooping on the idiots who dump. Cop them and Shop them, should be their motto, and the fines should be made larger. We are too soft on offenders of all kinds in this country.
One of the worst spots I saw in the past was part of the shore of Loch Awe, while fishing there in the 1980s. The Protection Order, so I heard, got rid of a lot of the 'Booze and Abuse' brigade some years ago. The minimum fine for dropping litter should be at least £500. for a fagpacket or a chocolate wrapper.
Then, the bigger the volume of rubbish dropped, the bigger the fine. One sackful, one year in jail. But that won't happen, as the jails are full of 'eejits' who are serving short terms for serious offences, because we just can't accommodate them. They have the right approach in Singapore. TC

Hey, as an Aussie, I am absolutely flawed by the amount of rubbish that abounds in the UK. Is there no pride? I know we may not be the in the world bt we do have a National clean up day where every town participates in cleaning up roadsides, waterways and anywhere else. I believe tat the last one in March this year gathered 90,000 tonnes across the country. What would it be in the UK. Even the Army is involved in the exercise.
My view is this. Empty packages must be heavier than full ones. For example, I used to guide in wilderness areas and I recall walking for two days and on reaching our destination I found a dozen empty beer bottles under a bush. I was knackerd after the two days, god knows what those guys were like.
Anyway, my tuppence anyway.

Default doughheeds

most digital cameras and even mobile phones take movie clips, handy for the odd poacher or litter dropper, they record sound too, if you walk up with it slightly concealed and on and say hey doughheed did you drop that? and they say - yes whats it to you or what ever, they are nicked and you get to call them a doughheed into the bargain.

I live by a river that is a popular picnic spot, and in the summer see a lot of rubbish left on the banks, which makes me mad The worse culprits were the lazy arses who drove down (before a barrier was installed), had a barbeque, then left all their rubbish behind, even though it was easy for them to take it home. I never thought I would end up a busybody but now I patrol the bank and 'help' people clear up their mess.Young shavers often have to go for a paddle to get their beer bottles out of the river, and I've had the satisfaction of dumping a bag of rubbish, including smouldering bbq in a family's open boot.Fortunately I'm a big bloke and haven't had any trouble (yet), the local police/community bobby didn't seem interested- maybe they will if it kicks off.Every time I see someone walking along the river with a Costa coffee cup and plastic sandwich I know where the packaging will go-I can't remember ever seeing anyone carrying empty cartons.Rant over..
