Default So Now what???

So i have relighted my love of the fly caught piscatory predators. My question is now...what next

I have the basics sort of mastered. I can cast far and kinda accurate, tie knots, know a figure of 8 retrive and some basic fish finding knowledge from my pike and lure fishing days. I even managed to catch yesterday (only one mind you)

In terms of equipment i have enough i.e. rod, line, floating, intermedioate and sinking line, and a small selection of flies (going to boost that after i do a search on th forum)

What next should i learn

I hear talk of lines of buzzers, double flies, indicators, stalking, hatches etc etc

Any advice most welcome

totally i agree, however I am sort of wondering where next to go. What would be the next logical step for me to take.

Then i can research the info on the forum. If that makes sense. searched yday evening and have a list of flies and an online shop to get them from. So i am not a newbie who posts answered questions time and time again i do some lol research...

Just wondering where next to go. I mean i can keep on doing what im doing and indeed lots of anglers do that but as a good sports coach once said to me "if you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got" and i normally blank at fisheries

My aims at the end of summer / autumn time is to be able to fish Farmoor and to know what im doing as well as perhaps treat myself to a birthday day at dever and hopefully catch a pb (needs to be more then 4lbs for that to happen lol).

I would sugest that you try to get an idea of the what/where/when, The flies you are trying to imitate.

surely must depend on what you want to achieve, ther is a sort of evolutionary pattern to fly fishing -

catch more - catch bigger - catch when nobody else does - catch more efficently - catch in different places - get overly concerned about leader make up - take a casting lesson and discover you have much more to learn than you realised - become pre occupied by perfect balance and buy lots of lines in the quest - fish wild - live rough - realise your never going to know it all and go fishing

Best advice - go fishing as often as you can with your eyes and ears open as they're the best bits of kit you've got and experience can't be bought online or in a tackle shop.

If you want to fish at Farmoor, and there really are some wonderful fish in there, why not start your education there rather than work up to it? It is perhaps not the most scenic of fisheries but there are no real obstructions to cause you headaches with casting, you can always choose a spot where the wind is behind you, in front of you, whichever you prefer, and there is deep water a short distance out right in front of you.

Oh, and the fish are of a very high quality.

If I were you I would get along to Farmoor I (catch and release) and fish a floating line with a leader as long as you can handle and fish a single imitative fly – diawl bach, black buzzer, PTN – you get the idea.

Very slow (or even static) retrieve and hold on.

And while you are on this learning curve bear in mind what Lighthouse has said.

Have fun!
