I fish with spiders quite often, I vary the length between them; but as a rule, 2ft-2ft'6in, apart, I fish a team of three spiders, or two spiders on the droppers, and a nymph or gold-head nymph on the point for deeper water; in shallow rough water, I'd put a weighted spider on the point, or in calmer water, three spiders, and retrieve the line slowly; maybe a figure of eight retrieve, I would also (in a calm flow) tie a dry fly on the top dropper, just in case it may induce a rising fish! - There are so many variants to spider fishing, I like the up-stream short line method, when the river is a little lower than normal, fish the riffles and runs close to the bank-side, cast up-stream, as the flies hit the water, lift the tip of the rod slightly!!
If your fishing across, and drifting the flies down-stream, keep the rod tip up, at the end of the drift, lift the rod completely before re,casting!!
Hope this helps in some way?
