Exclamation Rod License - Online Purchasing Warning

Purchased my rod licence online yesterday via the Environment Agency website.
I usually use my credit card for online purchases but didn't have it to hand so used my debit card instead.
1/2hr later my bank account was light to the tune of about £1000 thanks to my card being cloned and used to buy several mobile phones and gadgets from Comet!

Luckily the fraud dept at my bank picked it up and refunded the cash but was just wondering how secure the online site was?

I've advised all my friends to go direct to the Post Office for now or at least use their cedit card.

Just a warning really in case the website security has been compromised or someone at the EA / Post Office is selling card details on!

So is there any particular reason for thinking that this was due to the EA site?

Are you sure the 2 events are related or could it just be coincidence?

I ask as I also had a card identity pinched and £3k put on it a few years ago.
My Bank spotted this as "irregular purchases" and contacted me so no harm done.

I told the bank that I'd recently purchased goods via the internet using the card.

The bank told me that card identity theft from the internet was incredibly rare and that it was much more likely that my details had been lifted when using the card in a shop or garage, i.e. over the counter. (This was before chip & pin machines).

Cheers

The fraud dept at Alliance & Leicester attributed it to that transaction.

Not 100% sure if it was the EA website and definitely not pointing fingers or trying to scaremonger but just wanted to highlight the fact in case there is a problem.

Cheers

I do mine by direct debit , no problems that way.

My card was cloned a couple of years ago and used on an online Poker site the only thing was they didn't pay the winnings back into my account
