Default new member says hello and thanks

Hi there,

just checking in to say hello and introduce myself as a new member of this forum. I'm based in West Yorkshire and returned to fly fishing last March. I found this forum at the same time and I'm grateful for all the advice and tips I have picked up on my visits.

My previous experience had been as a teenager when back packing around North America in late 70's. On Vancouver Island I had access to an old fly rod with one fly and sort of taught myself how to catch the small cutthroat trout in the area.

Last spring, with a family holiday coming up in Shetland, I bought a 9' Shakespeare Trion and basic kit. I managed to squeeze in one session on Tingwall Loch and caught and returned a small silver trout (young sea trout?). After that I was 'hooked' again so joined Bradford City AA and picked up a 7' 4 weight trion for rivers.

I don't get much time with work and family committments but in the last year I managed 21 days and a variety of waters and fish.

Shetland (Loch of Tingwall),
Fewston Reservoir (first visit in April waded in wellies!),
Eyebrook (blanked twice!),
Toft Newton,
River Wharf (Buckden, Appletreewick, Addingham and Burley),
River Aire (Leeds),
Leeds Liverpool Canal,
Evening beach fishing near Camaret-Sur-Mer, Britanny, France,
Canal near La Rochelle, France.
River Nidd,
Scar House reservoir,

Fish species: young sea trout, rainbow & brown trout, chub, roach and carp. One of the most magical moments was catching small roach one summer morning on the local canal in West Leeds. The sun was up, crystal clear water and it was hard going. I came to a shady tree-covered stretch where I eventually managed to roll cast a small dry fly to the fish. Such delicate confident takes!

Thanks again for the generous sharing of information. Hope to meet some of you out and about this year.

Back up to Shetland next week and will get a day fishing. I'm staying in Scalloway but will be getting about the islands so would welcome any recommendations for a new lochs to try or possible meet up with a local member?

Nigel

Hi Dan and welcome, very interesting introduction.
I see you like your Trions, good rods for the money.
Can't help you with Scottish Lochs I'm afraid, but hope you enjoy the forum.

Welcome to the Forum. there is an excellent small paperback book
on trout fishing in Shetland that you can buy in the tourist office.

Thanks Jim.

I will look for it. Perhaps this is the book printed by The Shetland Times which I saw mentioned on the interweb but couldn't track down. I did pick up a leaflet at the tourist office last year which showed all the lochs. I realise you're spoilt for choice in Shetland with 100's of lochs but when you can only grab one session it's hard to pick one! Looking forward to it...

Nigel

This book is out of print, but for advice you could contact Alec Miller who is secretary of Shetland Anglers Assoc on 01595 695903 or pop in to the clubrooms which are open from 8.30pm on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Default Thanks for the advice

Hi Trooter, I didn't get along to the club or call Alec on this trip as family stuff took up most of time. I did get a couple of hours one afternoon on shore of Tingwall - I think a competition might have been on?

At the end of week I got an afternoon on Benston after having seen a mention on here earlier in season. Had one take but didn't get it in. Chunky troot on Benston! Hoping to get back up again for some more. You guys are lucky living up there...
