Default To click or not to click...

...that's my question.

I'm trying to decide whether to disable the click on my reel. I don't often play fish on the reel, mostly directly from the line so the drag is mostly to stop over-runs and needn't be noisy. I suppose the scream gives feedback as to when the drag is engaged, but I don't think I'd be unaware of this when fighting a big fish.

So I'm considering the virtues of silence. Less disturbance of other anglers, less disturbance of wildlife (and better chance of seeing it on the river) a more relaxed vibe when fishing...

Have any of you chosen the quiet approach, and did it work out, or am I missing a few hidden drawbacks?

I've been using silent Dragonfly reels for years but have just bought a Grey's GRXi The "clicking" is totally unnecessary and annoys the hell out of me

I've disabled the click on all my reels and never noticed a difference aside from things being much more peaceful.

I like a silent wind, but its nice to hear the reel scream when a fish runs.

Vision reels have a nice, low click.

I have an early Orvis reel, that you would need ear plugs to fish with.

Maybe not the deafening clatter of a cheap plastic reel, but the subtle click of some reels when in "full cry" with a fish on the run is a very nice sound!

At this point I must admit to being a sad git and buying a ringtone of a Hardy reel with line being stripped off from Fish and Fly. My ever suffering wife only rolled her eyes and shook her head! I guess it has to be better that the "Latin Dream" or other tacky tones you hear constantly on the train/tube. It can come in handy when you're at the river/lake and SWMBO summons thee home, and everyone will think you have a fish on rather than "who's that **** with the mobile?"!!

Getting back on topic though...

Can anybody tell me if it's possible to disable the click on a Greys GTX No2 (5/6 lines) WITHOUT disabling the drag??

I bought the No2 as I already have a No 3 which I really like and is silent. Unfortunately the No 2 has different workings and is very noisy particularly on the retrieve (strange!!).

Never seen a Greys GTX2, but it all depends on the type of reel. If it's a Click & Pawl then no, if it's a disc drag, then more than likely, as the click is independent to the drag mechanism. I have a Ross reel where you can have ingoing and outgoing clicks and you ca select any combination of off or on for either. On Abel reels it was always a silent drag but click retrieve, but recently they put a clicker in for those who like the sound of the line going out!
