Hi 'All. I think one of the causes of back ache when fishing is leaning forward from the waist when looking for dry flies or just as an extension of the angler's concentration. Leaning and straining to see the fly or the leader, when fishing wet/nymph syle, can cause neck pains. Before I had an eye op. about 5 years ago, dry fly fishing became painful after about an hour, and 20 minutes at the tying vice caused neck aches. A physiotherapist gave me the right advice. She said that our heads weigh about 9 lbs, if we had any brains in them, and that once you let your ears get in front of your shoulders, the neck muscles had to hold the weight. I never had a problem when salmon fishing, just dry fly, short range.
At the vice, pre the op. my left eye focused at about 5 inches, it was like a
magnifying glass, I could see every turn of thread, but had to lean forward to focus on the fly -- bad neck!!
No problem now, as I use a magnifying lamp. Just thought the comments might help someone who has similar pains and didn't know the causes. I also elaborated because short vision gets worse, and I didn't have the problem until I was in my 60s. Cheers. TC
