Default Know Any Good Soft Hackle Fly Fishing Books?

Good day everyone!

I am looking for some advice on which book you'd recommend for "soft hackle" fly fishing. I am looking for a book with technical instruction on technique, and would sincerely appreciate any and all advice from you guys and gals!

Cheers,
bcflyfisher

Hello bcflyfisher,

I do not think that there is anything written very recently - you could search the book stores for Roger Fogg's "Art of the Wet Fly", Sylvester Nemes' "The Soft Hackle Fly Addict".

Alternatively, there is a superb DVD that will help:

Kind regards

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yes, I was referring to spiders (wasn't quite sure if you still referred to them as that). I find it quite interesting how anglers use various terms and phrases in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, we do tend to massacre the English language in our neck of the woods...

Thanks for the excellent responses so far.

Cheers,

DVD Much to be recommended. It was the only specific spider tuition I had had before I tried fishing spiders for the first time. I caught nine fish using largely the upstream technique Oliver demonstrates - so it works. Also the DVD by OE in the same series (confusingly covering nymphs and spiders) is very good and this one covers spiders fished in a way more like what you might know as the "wet fly swing".

More generally I suspect any technique that would present the fly looking like either a partially or drowned insect or ones struggling to emerge would work. To paraphrase another website - whatever the trout take them for, one thing is clear - it's FOOD!

John Tyzack's DVD "Early Season Trout Fishing" is also an excellent guide to fishing and tying spiders (soft hackles).

There is comment on it in this thread

"Early Season Trout Fishing" DVD

I think it's better than Ollie's.

Phil at Spiderplus is right on the button. There are lot's of other around (I think I must have about all of them dating back to the 1700's) and if you want to get into it then Leslie Macgee's book on the North Country Tradition is a must.
Some one asked the difference between spiders and soft hackle flies. The latter is an america term which has been picked up world wide. Their flies are much coarser in tying that traditional spiders which are tied sparse. You will also understand over time that they are designed to fish deeper than traditional spiders. I am an addict of the Yorkshire style. For example, 8 fish today at Bolton Abbey all on spider patterns with the Snipe & Purple the king.

If you were to purchase just one of Mr. Nemes' books, would you recommend "The Soft-Hackled Fly and Tiny Soft Hackle" or "The Soft Hackle Fly Addict".

Thanks again for everyone's advice on this matter!

bc,

Personally I have not seen / read either book but take a look at amazon.com - you will probably find customer reviews of each book.

I think you will find that both books focus more on how to tie the patterns rather than how to fish them ...

Kind regards
