Default Calling River Kelvin Fishers

I am trying to put together a hatch chart for the River Kelvin. Over the years I have noticed people reporting various hatches at different parts of the river. What I would like to do is collect as much information as I can this season and then create a hatch chart. I am expecting to see differences between the top end and bottom end which is why it will be a little tricky.

I would like people to post in the River Kelvin forum with date, weather conditions and name of fly - ideally a wee photo would be good so there is no confusion. Even if you are not an expert in entomology you can still help by taking a photo of the fly (use macro mode) and post the picture - we can then try and identify it for you.

So if you are a Kelvin fisher head over to the forum once you have some photos or the ID of some flies - also if you are definite that you have seen a hatch on the river post it so we can get started.

Looking forward to the crawly fun :-)

Will that include the "fly" men that fish the river with no permit? Will try and remember next time we're on the river but will have no idea what they are.

Great idea Alistair!

I'll be sure to report on what I see, and take pics of any flies where I'm unsure of their species.

There was a sustained hatch of powerbait flies today, peaking around pub opening time and then tailing off dramatically. This strange luminous-coloured beast as well as the ever-present garden fly seem to be the predominant species on the river so far this season.
Lots of spent buckie bottles have now started their seasonal migration out to sea. It's amazing how they make it to the open ocean, then re-appear season after season in the very same tributary ditches they originated from.

Never fear if you cannot identify the fly Shanksi - just try and take a photo and then post it over on the forum....

Just had some signs printed up so there is no confusion around permits

great to see the signs mate ,were are the no fishing at any time going to be put ,,hhhmmmmm!!! i can see some tussles on the horizon, but I'm totally with you on your wish list and for me the sooner the better.

i have heard people saying the police have assured them that they don't need a permit for the sea pool at Yorkhill ,is this true ,i wouldn't think so .

do you need a hand to put up signs etc!! ,if so let me know via p.m and ill give you my phone number, so as you can let me know when its happening.

i am really happy to see the changes taking place ,as they are needed. well done to you and the other members on the board.

Hi Derek - A permit is needed for the whole of the river and also the part of the Clyde that the club pays for the rights for. I have no idea why people say they do not need permits for the "Sea Pool" - probably because they do not have a permit and just want to justify it to themselves

Anyway, they will not get away with it any longer - it may take a while to stamp it out however stamp it out it will be!

The no fishing signs are for bridges - this rule will be enforced this year.

The bailiffs are putting up the signs over the next few weeks.

However, we digress - what flies have you seen on the river?
