HPR The Riverfly monitoring that we do is overseen by The Riverfly Partnership
www.riverflies.org
This was originally set up by the Natural History Museum to find a way for the average person to monitor water on a regular basis by being trained to identify a simple range of indicator insects/crustacea. We count the numbers of each type as opposed to every different species (as done by the EA, but every 4 years!). However the EA have the results and by seeing changes in these or by identifying areas where results are poor, it helps them build a picture of the watershed and may indeed lead towards a particular pollution source.
The scheme is now operated by the Trout and Salmon Association.
The courses are shown on the Riverfly website and are well worth attending.
I will admit that going on one has changed the way I look at any river or stream now
