Default Trout by Public Transport

Hi Everyone,

I've only recently taken up fly fishing (going out for only the second time tomorrow) but I've well and truly caught the bug!
I had a days tuition with Mike from www.flyfishinginstructor.co.uk (highly recommended) and went out for the first time on my own last week and somehow managed to get 5 fish to the bank at Arnfield Fishery (including the 5.5lb beast you can see in my avatar!)
Most of the time I will be going out with friends but the problem I have is that I don't currently drive, so when I want to go out on my own I'm reliant on public transport.
So, basically I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for places to fish (stillwater or river) withing travelling distance of Manchester which can be accessed relatively easily from public transport?

Thanks Guys

I think that the Rivers Goyt and Bollin both have trout and are a short bus on train ride from Manchester. If you can get further out there is Meadow Fishery near Chester, not too far from the city at Mickle Trafford.

Train from Man, Piccadilly to New Mills Central, short walk down to the river Goyt, evidently very good fishing. `Glassjet could give you more info'.

Transpeak bus from Manchester to Bakewell (40 mins) to fish the Derbyshire Wye, 7 miles of rivers fishing for wild rainbows, brownies and grayling. Might be too far though?

Dont fall off yout chair - but there are trout in the Mersey which runs through Chorlton - and now you've picked yourself up off the floor - there are Salmon too! Its just a matter of locating the right areas.
Don't forget that Chorlton Brook is much cleaner than it used to be

Wow! Now you've got me excited!
Have you ever fished the Mersey around there? I walk around that area a lot but have never fished it. Mainly because I'm a little unsure about regulations, permission etc.
Any idea who, if anyone I would need permission off to fish the Mersey or Chorlton Brook? I've been out on the Mersey when a Mayfly hatch has been on and I've thought that it looks perfect for trout...but, do you honestly think catching one on a fly is a realistic possibility?
You've definately got me thinking...
...I'm going to be dreaming about a big Chorlton Salmon tonight! Haha!

An appropriate EA rod licence is all you will need for the Mersey at Chorlton. I say appropriate because if you do decide you are fishing for Salmon, you need to buy the £70 migratory licence, and not the £26 Trout & Coarse.

PS If you told anyone you were fishing for Salmon, they wouldn't believe you. A small number obviously pass through Chorlton, but whether they hold up here I don't know.

Very similar with the Irwell near me.
There are several spots that people fly fish.
When I was a kid my Labrador fell in and very nearly died of poisoning. It seems times have changed for the better.......

Well done CT, not many people would think it street cred to go fishing on a bus these days.
I take my hat off too you, you are obviously keen.
For medical reasons I haven't been able to drive for the last twelve months, and I live in the sticks, no buses here either, so I know what it's like to not have the use of a car.
Luckily I have a good wife, (she is stood behind me,) and some kind friends who have run me around, and I am forever grateful.
Keep at it CT and good luck.
