Default Fly to Leader???

How do you tie your fly onto your leader?
After my first practice on grass today I am wondering about the above question.
I suppose you change your fly now and then if not successful as you do in lure fishing.
In the latter I would use some sort of rig clip for quick changes. I have plenty of knots I can call on but this would shorten my leader on each change (eventually rendering the leader useless).
Is there a clip available or do you just snip and re tie (not an easy feat with a fine line, small fly and up to your arm pits in river)????

My apologies for my ignorance but the only experience I have is pike lure fishing and sea fishing.

Add a sacrificial tippet to a shop bought tapered leader... use a 2 turn water knot for monofilament nylon or co-polymer but a 3(as a minimum) or 4 turn water knot for monofilament fluorocarbon.

Knotting fluorocarbon to nylon or co-polymer is generally considered to be a bad idea. I've heard lots of theories as to why that is and haven't really been convinced by any of them, but it is true that if your knots are poorly tied you'll get a weak join as the fluoro tends to slip through the knot, or is weakened significantly by heating as the knot is pulled tight. Tie them carefully or use a loop to loop connection between fluoro and nylon/copoly mono's and you'll be fine.

You don't need to add much, a foot or so is sufficient. After a few changes of fly, replace the tippet with another length and start over.

Cheers,

I use a tucked half blood knot. It is simple to tie, works and uses a minimum amount of line.

as adam says a sacrificial bit of level tippet (just some plain mono line with a fancy name ) attached to the fine end of your leader with either water knot or a tippet/leader ring.

The rings will last for ages and make your leaders last longer, also eaiser to use.... but there not really that necessary, just extra bits of kit and expense

I like to add tippets using rings, all Uni knotted, but if you don't like them then you can use back-to-back Uni knots to join anything to anything. No problems at all joining fluoro to nylon or copolymer.

Then tie your flies onto the tippet with a Uni knot too.

I favour the uni knot fot attaching my flies, having come to fly fishing from beach casting i too was a little suspicious .. i tried many different knots and have found the uniknot to give me consistent results i have not had one fail on me
