Default Stillwater Leader Setup: How close should the flies be?

Hi there,

thanks for everyones thought's about my questions... I'm pretty much learning about stillwater fishing and have all sorts of funny questions..

Consider this setup. End of fly line attach 6feet of 8lb to top dropper, 3 feet to next fly, 3 feet to next fly.

I'm trying to figure out whether having flies close together (like the above) is better than having them widely spread apart ~6 - 10 feet between flies.

Does it really matter?

It does matter in my opinion, I rarely fish the droppers closer than five feet, sometimes a little more with lures, though you'll need a long handled net to reach fish on the point. There is the odd exception- if I'm fishing a small booby/muddler on the top as an attractor I'll position a nymph three feet below it.A lot of fish are wary of teams if they can see more than one fly at a time, indeed sometimes, when they're being picky on the surface, it is best to concentrate on a single fly.

Hi, not sure what size/wt of flys, line wt you are using but you need a thicker butt section, ideally tapered. A usual llyn set up for me would be 6wt line, 10ft tapered leader ending with 10-12lb. A 3.5 ft length of 6lb to the first dropper, followed by 4ft to the next dropper, followed by 5 ft to the point.

Try using a longer length to the point that between the other droppers. As you know, this fly usually gets changed the most.

Ta, Lee.
