Default Introduction, Hello.

Hello all
I think for my first post an introduction is in order.
My name is Iain and I live in Manchester. I have never fly fished in my 45 years and thought it was about time I put that right.
I enjoy shooting, sea fishing and pike fishing and am looking forward to chucking out some of this thick stuff.
I love the tradition and the craft of the fly fisher and just hope it’s not too late to become good enough to catch on a regular basis.
I hope to be driving you all mad with stupid questions very soon like is it acceptable to wear a bow tie with Tattersall check or should I go for a traditional tweed tie? but for the mean time I am happy to trawl the forum and try to find out what the hell you are all talking about. There seems to be a fair amount of jargon and abbreviation so please forgive me when I but into one of your posts with a few questions.
I look forward to picking a few brains and hope to speak to you very soon.

Iain………….(acid house)

Hi Iain, and welcome, are you going to be fishing stillwaters or rivers or both ?
You will find some good advice on here. Enjoy.

I hope to get involved in both. A good friend of mine from my gun club is helping me out in a few weeks and taking me to his fishing clubs lake to see if he can help me with my first fish. I do fancy moving water though but its early days yet and a bit of practice on the lawn is needed. What fly is best to catch earth worms???

HI', Iain, and welcome. It's never too late to start fly fishing; a fair number of flyfishers come to the sport when they retire. There is a lot for you to learn, but as I often say to people, there has never been a time when so much good information was available to the beginner, via so many media.
As far as question-and-answer learning go, you will find this forum an absolute warehouse of information, and you will get a few laughs as a bonus. Good luck with your climb up the learning curve. TerryC

If you want some gardeners fancies, you can't beat a good torch and some stealth.

Hi', again, Iain. Regarding the best fly for catching worms; at a guess, Spanish Fly. Pour some over the lawn, it will make the worms randy, and when they have sorted out all those available below ground, they will come up to see if there's anything doing up top. Cheers. TC
PS I know worms are hermaphrodite, but you never know!!
