Default Mullet on the Fly at the Cumbrian Fishing Festival

I’m delighted by a new addition to our programme. Cumbrian guide and instructor Lee Cummings AAPGAI will host two day-long events pursuing mullet on the fly on the Cumbrian coast. I would have thought this to very early in the year for these ‘british bonefish’, but no. Lee assures me that there will be fish around. Better still the average size is expected to be between 7and 8 lbs.

There are only 5 places available on each day. Anyone interested should go to www.gofishinglakedistrict.co.uk click on Events for Monday and Tuesday for Lee’s contact details, cost etc.

Once saw a boy fly fishing for mullet down at Cockenzie power station as we were fishing for bass at the time thought it a bit mad at the time as he placed a piece of bread over a hook and cast into the warm area of the water until he caught one his rod was doubled over fighting it. It soon sent thoughts of changing fishing tactics through my head

Not really David, NMC Member Steve Smith bagged a 5:02 and a 4:01 Thick Lip at Lymington last Saturday.

And the Thin Lips have been "in" for some time.

I asked Lee the same question with a look of incredulity. He's adamant about the size. And it doesn't surprise me that mullet are around Lymington - its down south where the sun always shines.......................

Hi', Lee. I don't think we have met, but I am interested and have a high respect for what you say. My only experience of fly fishing for mullet was back in 1997 and 98 when I fished a couple of times at Broadwater near the Dysinny estuary, byTowyn, not far from Dolgellau, where I hooked and lost three. Saw a big fish, about 6lb, browsing algae off a rock right in the bank edge (man-made bank ) and one a pound or two heavier, cruising, solo, down the river, midstream.
My old fishing pal, now deceased, alas, saw some big specimens in Silloth dock, where the kids used to catch them on bread paste, made from flour spilled at the dock side, apparently. Ken could never get a a bite on deadbaits no matter how small they were.
One day while fishing the Eden estuary for flatties we saw a shoal of fish making tiny dimples and priming occasionally, we thought they must be mullet.
If they were, some of them were big fish. Hope your mullet course goes well.
Cheers. TerryC
