Default 2 biggest faults I see anglers make.

There is 2 things that make me cringe when I see anglers setting up rods for a fishing session.
One is pulling the line through the rod tip while holding onto the butt and the tip is bent double.especially if the leader is already attached to the fly line as the braided loop sticks in the tip ring and they continually tug at it to force it through the tip of the rod,I just wait for the snap.rather than lay the rod down and feed it through the the tip ring.
Next is when they start to take the fly line off the reel to feed through the rings and it has the tippet already attached and wound on the reel from the last outing and its gone deep into the line on the reel and gets stuck and they start to pull hard to loosen it.The nylon cuts into the fly line and you end up having to get a new one.For the sake of putting on a new peice of nylon and saving your fly line its worth taking off the nylon at the end of each session.
Save your money.

few things I learned.

I have a fixed Leader on my fly line and always wind it round the outside of the reel. That way it doesn't bite into the main line.

Put your rod up from the top section down, having first put the reel on..in other words put the butt section on last. That way your reel isn't lying on the ground.

Double up the Fly line before putting it through the rod rings..the leader will follow and if you drop it, it won't go crashing down to the reel again.

Your right, the only time it happened to me was, when starting to fish a small Salmon river, i noticed a fresh run salmon showing in the neck of the pool,
i became a bit stir crazy, and in my hurray to tackle up, i held the rod by the handle and pulled the line through, bending the rod,
And yes i snapped the top, the worst thing was, after fishing for over 40 years, and knew not to do this
I couldn't believe how stupid id been, i learned the hard way,
And would never do this again.
GOOD ADVICE DON'T DO IT,
I also saw an Angler catch his fly on a tree, he held the rod by the handle putting a bend on it, and was yanking to release the fly and snapped the top.
DON'T DO IT.
And yes i see anglers often take the flies of the leader when finishing
and winding the leader on to the reel.
DON'T DO IT>
And finally the amount of anglers i see that have not removed the protective plastic from the Cork handle,
Keeping this on causes condensation and the Cork to rot.
DON'T DO IT.

And the old "Hang em high" method when bringing a fish in and the rod is bent like a hairpin.SNAP Snap Snap.

I wind my leader onto the reel when I`m packing up, I did have problem with it getting stuck once. I fixed this by guiding the leader from left to right while winding. This creates a criss cross pattern and so preventing the leader from burying itself in your fly line.

Wasn't it Hugh Faulkus who said he always stripped his line off the reel right down to the backing every time he set up, just in case the line had got tangled on the spool.
I think he once got into a decent fish and on the first run the reel locked because of this and snapped him.
I always remember that, but I never do it.
