Hey there all,

This is probably been asked a million times :-)

Can someone give me a how-to guide on the correct way to hang the flies when fishing out of a boat.. Been using slimeline - di8 and still don't think i hang correctly ( by that i mean i'm not getting much fish on the hang)..

Any help would be much appreciated..

Using some coloured thread, whip a marker on to your line at the point where you want to start your hang. As this indicater reaches, say the top eye, then you know exactly what depth your flies are fishing at.

Default Thanks for the info

So when the tip of my rod hits the marker, I just stop the retrieve and keep the rod parallel for about 5 - 10 seconds then recast the flies?

A couple of things, you won't catch on the hang every time but you know that. As far as I am aware as you retrieve your line you leave enough outside of the rod tip to enable you to roll cast, but you do not go straight into the cast, you can just slowly raise the rod tip allowing the flies to "hang" and at this point if there are any interested fish then they will take the fly, the reaction of the fish is usually a response to the change of action by the fly\lure\bait it was pursuing\following, you can dabble your top dropper just on the surface and this action alone can provoke a take, just be aware that if you get a take at this time the best way to hook the fish is to go into the roll cast, this is the easiest way of taking up any slack line without falling backwards out of the boat

I hope this helps and I dare say better anglers than me will be along to help with this

regards
Chris

Default thanks for the help

How high do you need to raise the rod? and actually why do you need to raise the rod slowly? if I just stop at the marker without raising my rod (keep the rod about 1 foot off the water) is this a hang?

Ok, you retrieve the flies with the rod level with the water, you raise the rod slowly as you go into the roll cast, you can pause at any time.

If you are new to the boat fishing I would suggest a day afloat with an APGAI\GAIA instructor, they will put you right and get you set up along the right lines from the start, also you will get more out of 6-8 hours afloat with an experienced guide\instructor than you will get from information online

What area are you from

Regards

Chris

No. Your flies will still be 15' below the surface if you do that.Say marker is 15' then marker hits tip ring.stop for a few seconds ,Then bring marker to hand start bringing your top dropper up to surface by raising rod ,top dropper hits surface ,hold still and look to see if any trout are following.getting read to roll cast/strike. hold for as long as you like. thats the hang.

Dont bother waiting after retrieve. pull to the point where you can lift the line and put it back out comftably. personaly if i,ve not got anything after 4/5 pulls of the line i lift it and put it back out. Im not saying you,ll not catch anthing after that but very little not worth the energy wasted if you dont do it you,ll find it to be true in time. hope this is of some help. cheers Alan
