Hey lets just ban boats we can fish from the shore, as long as we dont wade too deep

I agree it is safer to be seated for sure but in my mind this still boils down to personel choice, their are many things we do in life that have a degree of danger and can be classed as unneccessary but we cant go banning everything we dont agree with.

More people will die in the next 12 months from climbing Everest than they will from falling out of boats fly fishing but we dont ban mountineering, i could go on all night with examples like this.

I like to stand up and cast and i will continue to do so and safely.....
I feel perfectly safe standing while flyfishing... Maybe it's because i have a good solid 19 foot sheelin lakeboat..? You physically couldnt tip the boat over..

Thank god i dont have to fish the kind of waters where you are dictated to in this manner... in fact i just wouldn't fish them....

How about if the gradient is too steep whilst bank fishing, should we also have to sit down to fish aswell ! where do we draw the line ?
Due to a bad back i can`t sit down and cast and never intend to, but i`m wise enough to know that when the conditions are unsafe i`m not actually going to get in a boat.

Any boat that is so unstable that could be capsized by a single person standing up is unsafe and should not even be on the water.

It's perfectly safe and sensible to stand, or at least cast from an elevated seating position, in a modern boat that's properly designed with flat casting platforms. It's only standing in unsafe boats that causes safety concerns.

In an ideal world what you do in a boat would depend upon experience. A bit like learner drivers not being allowed on motorways. But I don't want legislation to start creeping into my fishing!

95% of the time I am firmly planted in my seat. Sometimes I stand to cast to a fish at an odd angle. But, and its a big but, I always consider the weather and how much grip my boots have on the bottom of the boat. I will also stand up so that that the breeze catches me and straightens the boat. Note that I say breeze not wind!

The problem with the world is that there is no common sense left. Lots of people seem to leave their brains at home and so risk the lives of others!

I don't stand up in boats to fish. On the whole I think it's a pretty stupid thing to do. But I think we've got enough nanny state bans already without having a ban on people standing up in fishing boats. I can't say I've ever actually heard of anyone drowning as a result of it so I don't think the risk can be all that high.
