Default New to fly fishing - Help with leaders, tippets, droppers etc!

Hi all,

Having been a keen sea angler for for the past few years, I have decided to give the game fishing a go this year as the river Tweed is practically on my doorstep.

At the moment, I'm trying to get to grips with leaders, tippets, droppers etc etc. Last time I went fly fishing, I just tied a length of 3lb nylon to the main line with a knot and that was that. Probably why I never caught much!!!!

What are the best setups to use, at the business end of the main line?
How do I tie the whole lot together? etc etc etc.

Regards
NetGhost

Hi netghost,
The above link should give you a great oversight as to what leaders are designed for. It also includes a leader calculation tool if you want to make your own (which I do).
However, I have found the Frog Hair leaders do a great job as they have a butt diameter condusive to matching the right thickness etc.
Have a look at the web-site, and if you have any questions o want some other information about leaders, PM me and I would be happy to oblige.

Practically every town in the Borders has its local angling association - top tip is to join one and learn from the locals - these folks know the local waters better than almost anyone else.

That - combined with the interweb is a fabulous set of resources.

Go have fun.

Hi all,

Tanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I don't have the time right now to be able to join a club. Once I've finished work, my free time is taken up with designing and marketing my own fishing website and club.

Having had a quick 'surf', I've decided I'm just gonna buy my tapered leaders online until I've gained some more experience and knowledge on fly fishing.

A couple of questions I have for now:

1.) What is the best method for attaching the butt end of the leader to the fly line?

2.) When changing patterns, do I clip the line and tie on the new pattern or do I remove the entire leader and tie on a new one?

3.) The best combination of patterns to use on a leader with 2 droppers.

Regards
