Don't watch it for the fly fishing ... there isn't any. Sorry. I did my best.
Shame, cos we filmed catching some big bass in tokyo harbour (got one of about 7lbs) and also an ancient form of fly-fishing called tenkara - where you use only a short zero-weight rod and no reel, just six foot of silk line and a tippet and hop skip up mountain torrents trying to catch a pretty Japanese trout called an amago. I did get a couple, though they were tiny. Neither sequence made the cut.
This is much more an off-beat travel doc. about the various weird and wonderful and sometimes disturbing ways the Japanese relate to fish: a rock band that sings only about tuna, live-fish sashimi (a disturbing bit), the tuna trade (another disturbing bit), fishing for a grayling-like salmonid called an ayu with trained cormorants etc. etc.
Cheers for the heads-up Mat. I'm not catching all your trout I promise.
Charles.
