Default Fish - a Japanese Obsession

Just had a note from Charles of Accidental Angler fame that his latest BBC production will be showing on BBC4 on Monday the 23rd at 9PM. Apparently its all about the Japanese obsession with all things fishy. Not sure how much fly fishing is involved but knowing Charles it will be very entertaining no matter what.

Keep an eye out for it.

Mat

Don't watch it for the fly fishing ... there isn't any. Sorry. I did my best.

Shame, cos we filmed catching some big bass in tokyo harbour (got one of about 7lbs) and also an ancient form of fly-fishing called tenkara - where you use only a short zero-weight rod and no reel, just six foot of silk line and a tippet and hop skip up mountain torrents trying to catch a pretty Japanese trout called an amago. I did get a couple, though they were tiny. Neither sequence made the cut.

This is much more an off-beat travel doc. about the various weird and wonderful and sometimes disturbing ways the Japanese relate to fish: a rock band that sings only about tuna, live-fish sashimi (a disturbing bit), the tuna trade (another disturbing bit), fishing for a grayling-like salmonid called an ayu with trained cormorants etc. etc.

Cheers for the heads-up Mat. I'm not catching all your trout I promise.

Charles.

Think I have seen the thing with the Cormorants before, a band round the neck or something to stop them swallowing the catch. Very interesting stuff.
I will definitely be tuning in. Hope there are no hi fives and hey man shouting in it, wouldn't expect it from a nice chap like yourself.
Cheers Steven.

That's not what my sources are telling me!!! I look forward to seeing some photos upon your return and catch a couple for me.

BBC1 is plugging this alot. Maybe they are trying to steal all of the Channel 5 pike spearing audience.

Shame the fly fishing ended up on the cutting room floor.

Best
Mat
