Red face Traveling light ?

Hi Guys

Im having real trouble do the "traveling light thing" Which is part of the beauty of fly fishing. I just cant seem to do it !!

Example ~ Fished a Loch the other day a good walk from the car, i wanted to "travel light"........box of flys in the pocket,waders,priest,rod,net,nylon.............

However i ended up taking my telescopic landing land, and a snowbee bag cos i might need lures so the lure box went in , then the fast sink spare spool, then the slow sink spare spool, then me wee lure box , then my other naturals box, priest, bottle of water, lunch, about six different spools of line "in case" i wanted to tie up very light or very heavy tapered leaders, proberly a few other odds and sods i cant remeber

Ended up catching on my floating line with flys from the normal natural box, the long landing net came in handy (no pun intended ) so i could have travelled light

Anyone else have this problem

i think everyone has that problem!!! what you want to do is give your self the desert island kit and see how it goes for a couple of trips. beleive me when you force yourself to make do you will make do takes some of the hassle out as well, but maybe not the frustration

i bought myself a 9' 5# orvis frequent flyer just for the job of being able to fish anywhere. Try pretying yourself a couple of each leader type you will need, so you can just carry a couple of spools for tippet. a floater is a very universal line, and you would be amazed how fast you can drag a floater down with polyleaders.
mud can be used to degrease lines, so you can dispense with the fullers earth etc. you can use the grease from behind your ears and the side of your nose- even your ear wax if you wish as floatant. I would entirely dispense with the net altogether. a well waxed pair of boots with gaiters will allow you to handle the fish in the water, if you are not already wearing some form of wader. even wellies do the job admireably!!!
you can use your teeth to cut line, but its not reccomended, but i find 5lb and below like butter with my teeth.

For once no.

I used to have this problem as a course angler. I had a huge box, massive net and bait bag and a multi tube rod bag with a trolley to carry it all on. It was one of the reasons it's all largely redundant now, I got fed up with carrying it all miles along canals and rivers.

I only ever travel light now. Every bit of fly tackle I own can be fitted in my waistcoat and that's the way it'll stay. If I can't carry it comfortably it stays home. I love it.

No more aching limbs and blisters. Just easy walking and fishing.

I know what you mean Englander, and I have yet to start my float tubing in ernest, I can hardly imagine all the stuff you need for that game.
I fish a small beck quite close to my house starting mid April time, and it's great.
Thigh waders, vest, no net, all I need in vest pockets, which can be mono and one fly box.
I know the water like the back of my hand, and just what flies to take.
I have been on the Eden today with TC.
Chest waders, wading boots, wading belt, wading staff, rod reel vest, waterproof rolled up in bag just in case, Food drink scoop net hat specs shades.
By the time I get dressed I'm worn out, and ready for a sit down.

I used to have this problem, carrying big bags, boxes whatever until i discovered the wonder of a waistcoat with lots of pockets!

I also only carry the essentials now, lots of different nylons, couple fly boxes, reel, spool, priest etc all fits in my waistcoat. I was out on the river today with my salmon gear, after tackling up with the double hander the only other things i had were waders and waistcoat with the gear.
