Hi Richard
"To Rise a Trout" by John Roberts the copy I have was published in 1995 but if you can find a copy I would recommend on the basis that it is a good combination of analysis and opinion. Its well illustrated too both b/w and colour.
Cheers
Mike

Not exclusively dry fly orientated, this one....but for a great appraisal of river and loch tactics in general, Bob Wyatt's book Trout Hunting is a safe bet in my opinion.

I agree, i was just recommending it to someone today.
You come away learning a lot more than just about fishing. If i work out what it is i will let you know.

As an out and out favourite i would say Vincent Marinaros 'a modern dry fly code' would have to be my choice
however i would regard three books as essential reading for the dry fly enthusiast

1. a modern dry fly code

2. sunshine and the dry fly by J W Dunne

3. the dry fly and fast water by G La Branche

i gather that there is a current printing of the dry fly and fast water, but suspect that the other 2 books will now only be available from a second hand bookseller, try Paul Morgan at Coch-Y-Bonduu books if you are interested, he's a helpfull fella who should be able to sort you out with any of the above

cheers

Morty

The dry fly is a method with wide application in the UK and Ireland, whether that's on chalk streams and rain fed rivers; large natural lakes, lochs, loughs and llyns; large supply reservoirs; and small commercial stillwaters. I don't know of any modern or heritage book that covers the lot. You probably need 3 or 4. I am an English southern softie so know little about Scottish and Irish applications, but for my own fishing Peter Lapsley's 2 books, Charles Jardine's 2 books, and the amazingly useful Henry Lowe ones, all contain sound advice on dry fly fishing.

A book that you should try and get (every fly fishermen should have a copy) is 'A man may fish' by KC Kingsmill-moore. The book is not only a fantastic read - a fly fishing classic - but it givs extensive coverage of lough fishing. Although it speaks of Ireland, the practicalities can be used just about anywhere. For instance in Tasmanian waters.
On specific 'dry fly fishing', most books cover something and those in this thread will help.
