Default Google earth fishing map of UK

Wouldn't it be nice if there was one ? Showing all the rivers and lakes with marks on showing who owns fishing rights and who to contact for day tickets, membership etc. Just zoom into an area you are visiting or want to visit and lots of markers are on the map showing where you can fish.

I'm putting this idea out there in the hope someone has the technical know how and desire to kick start this. Ideally a separate layer of info, limited to users of this forum would be nice to avoid rubbish clogging it up, forum users would be encouraged to enter the info they have on their usual fishing haunts.

Any comments or ideas ?

Joel

I remember there was something similar for satnavs that shows you a lot of fishing places

Why bother? Well, I'm hoping to find it useful when holidaying in the UK but also since I started fly fishing you've been a hugely helpful bunch so I'm hoping to "put something back in" and I hope that others will find it useful too.

Better still, you can now use

As I said it is VERY much a work in progress.

Hi busdriver

That's great but the problem with that model is it needs one person to put on ALL the info. The way for it to really work is for forum members to be able to log onto it and add notes / reference points in the same way you can add markers in google earth. No good having it completely open as every tom dick etc will be putting on irrelevant info. Something like "click to add fishery limits" "click to add fishing details" and up pops a data entry box :- fishing rights owned by:- , day tickets Y/N, FLY only Y/N, Other fishing restrictions (please list) :- Contact :- etc.

Our friends with paddles.

These are paddlers who seem to be a bit ahead of the game.

They are certainly getting closer (the paddlers) but I think something better than this should be possible.

What their projects lack is an organised way of members posting their info. One site has the option of users adding sites but in an undisciplined way so the value of the map markers is quite low(lots of look at me mum I'm on the map type markers), some kind of data entry form is needed to draw the needed info from the person entering details. The other site is quite good in terms of info content but is back to one person putting in all the info which limits the amount of sites marked. We need to draw on is the vast wealth of knowledge of all the members of this forum. If done well it could be amazing.

It might be a good project for the hosts of this forum since such a valuable resource would add a lot of interest.

I think it is a great idea. I have the environment agency maps, but they only cover some fishing.

I am just not technical. I wonder if we could have a chat with the FFF people. Their web site is a good one and boy it would be an attractor ..... for all fisherman.

I know the world of golf which I also participate in has a really good source, with an ability to place reviews etc etc:

http://www.top100golfcourses.co.uk

Just a slightly different format would be great .......... maybe even a small cah earner on the advertising front!

I've done this for my club rivers, using google maps. The satalite view is pretty good, rather than map view. You can also add pushpins with photos of where to park, etc.

With google maps you can then publish to the on-line community, and have named collaborators who are the only people who can edit the maps. Perhaps seek regional volunteers off this forum to act as the collaborator for each area.

Here's an example. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...d39f9766701745

Best viewed by switching to satalite view, dragging the map and then zooming in. I've added photo's to some of the parking and pushpin signs, kindly taken by the guys from Corwen and District AC. Also take a look at the club's new website 'cos Phil (graylinghunter) has been doing something similar with their fishing maps.
