On my blog as part of the "Mayfly in the Classroom" scheme.

http://urbantrout.blogspot.com/

This scheme allows pupils to construct their own aquaria from cheap or recycled materials and raise mayfly nymphs taken from their local streams. During the course of the growth and metamorphosis of their mayflies, pupils will also learn about the value of healthy streams filled with fish, invertebrates and plant life. They will also get the opportunity to use their local streams as "outdoor classrooms".

Hi', Paul. By coincidence, I spent today assisting the educational officer of our local organisation, Eden Rivers Trust, at a school for years 1 to 6 at a village on the bank of the River Eden. 91 kids passed through the travelling workshop, where we showed them a great variety of invertebrates collected from the Crowdundle Beck, further up the valley, by Becky.
Becky, ERT, and her colleagues are more familiar with the larvae than the adults, and I have great fun linking the bugs to the adult flies etc, illustrating our work with close-up pics and boxes of artificial flies. The microscope and video camera in the van fascinated them. Very rewarding involvement. Catch them young and educate them properly!! Cheers Terryc
PS Becky is going back later in the month to have a river day with them. That will be a bit more demanding, but she knows her job!
