Default Newbie advice

Hi everyone.

I'm a total flyfishing novice (I think I've explained this in the past) but now gearing up for some action once spring arrives proper like.

I invested in a pike set up a while ago but have since added a smaller set up to go for other species.

I've figured out how to load my new greys reel and may I say I think I've done rather well! . It's not rocket science though is it?

I've attached my braided loops but here's my query. I need to add my tippet material but I'm not sure what I need and how to do it. Do I purchase a spool of tippet material or do I look for pre-made tippets? If I just buy a spool what strength do I look for. My line and rod is 5/6wt. I'm assuming given the loop on the leader that a simple loop to loop set up is adequate enough?

As always, your help is much appreciated.

Andy

i would opt for tapered leaders to aid turnover for you ,attatched by loop to loop.

Cheers Bruce. Seems a sensible way to start.

From reading your question, it occurred to me you may be confusing tippet with leader.

The leader is attached to your fly line. You then attach tippet to the end of the leader and the fly is attached to the tippet.

Tippet is used for a variety of reasons, to extend the leader, to make it finer and harder to see, and it's sacrificial so you don't shorten your leader every time you change flies.

Leaders come either in the pre-made version that are already tapered, or you can make your own by combining different lengths and diameters of "straight" leader material.
