Default Rod joint tape

I remember reading a thread about rod joint tape a year or two ago regarding what tape to use or what tape not to use due to the stickiness when removing either affecting or taking off the rod varnish.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Sportsfish sell 3M tape, super 33+ for £5.95. According to their catalogue it doesn't leave a residue!

Have used this tape and its no different than regular insulating tape. It leaves a sticky residue after it. I don't use any tape now, I just check my joints every so often.

Looks like I need to 'do' sportsfish for false advertising then

I was talking to some guy from Snowbee last week ref a new Xs-Pro i have just baught, they are prone to coming apart, he said to rub candle wax over the spigot and they will not come apart, i would imagine this would be the same for other rods.

Always used candle wax on my old fibreglass rods, never needed to try it on carbon but I imagine it would work fine.

I don't bother to tape single handed rods.

For the double handers I use normal cheap insulating tape. Unusual for the varnish to come off but does it really matter if it does?

Default joint tape

Candle wax is just as good as anything.

Thanks for the reply's, I do use candle wax on my rod joints but it was just something I'd thought about whilst fishing last Sunday waiting for that big big fish

The best thing by far is Amalgamating tape. Used in the electrical/telecomms industry for waterproofing joints. Is not sticky & leaves no residue. Left on too long (days/weeks) can be difficult to remove other than that no problem.
