Default Where to go for my 1st fly session?

Hi all

Would appreciate some advice as to where to go for my first session after trout on the fly. I am an experianced coarse angler, but new to all this.

My local waters are Rutland, Elinor, Graffham etc. It will be from the bank, so my main considerations are good banks with easy casting (and no wading), and preferably the odd easy take !!! Had my first casting lesson, so at least i can get it out there in a fashion !!!

Now i don't want to appear to want too much info, but help with flies and methods for the suggested water would be handy to set me on the right tracks. I have 7wt sinking and floating lines.

Many thanks in advance

Nick

I would suggest Elinor to begin with Nick, excellent water, plenty of fish, great bank fishing (even if you dont want to wade) and it wont take you two days to walk round it.

It is owned and run by Ed Foster, whom is a top chap and will gladly help you out.

Tightlines

Of the three you mention Nick, I'd also recommend Elinor. There is usually plenty of activity to the Dry Daddy Long Legs over the next couple of weeks, or if you are keen to give lure fishing ago then the yellow flexi floss worm is hard to beat there.

Grafham and Rutland are a little more daunting due to their size, but if you decide to give one of them a go, you should probably be using fry imitations (zonkers, minkies, floating fry, sinfoils fry, epoxy stickleback, epoxy phillips fry, babydoll etc.)

Regards,
Terry.

Thor,

If it's not too far from you could I suggest Bransford game Fishery near Malvern. I did suggest it to another beginner on the forum..he made the journey and I received a pm thanking me profusely for the recommendation.

It is quite a small fishery, therefore not daunting. Very well manicured..get out of your car and start fishing and believe me, you will catch fish. We take my small Grandson there and on the C&R pool he gets well into double figures. It's a great place for a confidence booster.

Thanks for the replies and advice guys, looks like Elinor has it 3:1.

I'll let you know how it goes on Sunday.

Default First outing

My personal experience came from cicumstances,as yourself fresh from inactivity but keen as mustard visiting friends in Wrexham with all my new tackle from my 40th birthday. Well of to LLandegla and 8 sodden hours later I returned with 4 lovely stocked trout and a day to remember.
Since then I have travelled all over the north and even as far south as Elinor and as the rest of the forum point out thats the place to go. My trip started really well with a really welcome greeting from Ed and pointers on where to fish (this guy WANTS you to catch). At lunch Id not had a pull but it was bitterly cold in the morning and as the afternoon warmed up so did the fish.
I returned home 100 plus miles later with a bag limit of 6 fish all taken in the last hour of fishing, proof if ever it was needed that perseverance will prevail this was it.
Elinor is the place although if you ever fancy a challenge theres a beautiful northern res in Stocks, ive never caught a fish there but would join you in attempting to break my blank, it really is beautiful and so peaceful.
OH and if you would rather fish for wild browns in northern streams with grayling thrown in we can accommodate.
Just send a PM .
Gary

Thanks for the advice all, had 4 hours at Elinor on Sunday afternoon. Result, one 3lbs rainbow, one lost and one pull not connected, and 4 irretrievable tangles!!! Apparently this was quite good for the bank on the day.
The casting needs severe work, but enjoyed the change of scenery, and the 16 Metres of very expensive carbon may just move to the back of the garage.
Nick.
