Default what fly's will you be starting with

hi all,
following on from the hatch thread, what flies will you be starting of with when the season opens for our rivers,
as i have'nt cast a fly in anger at a trout before,i could do with some general pointers as to what to start with, and what the general aproach at the start of the season is,
i have been watching the OE videos but as they all seem to be filmed middle to late summer,i am not sure if the methods are good for early season,
so my thinking is to go with a ptn/hares ear,and spider aproach,

how will you start

FIMI,

AS a complete 'newb' to river fishing, i have only a vagu idea, so I reckon I would start with #14 spiders, S&P, P&O, maybe something with some weight to it on the point.

That just about hits it on the head for me too.
Season is a bit late in arriving here in Sunny Cumbria, but I will be trying Buzz's Brians, and keeping a close eye out for any surface activity, whilst wetting a Spider or two.
Good luck Paul.

Last season on the Eden (paa) I caught 42 fish in the first 3 visits (2 trips in march and 1 in april on the Duo, best fly was a size 14 beaded ptn taking 39 of them, the rest came to the dries. With the Duo you can cover so much water without having to change - critical if its cold and the hatches are short - also play around with the distance between the dry and the nymph, the are days when it matters. Like the others have said the spiders are worth a coat of looking at, but I know what ill be starting on

tight lines

It really depends what coming off the water.
I really want to see LDO's or March Browns if so it will be a size 14 or 16 CDC low riders or emergers.
If nothing is showing or its just the odd splash i will fish the ripply stuff with a light tan klink, Bptn then a GRHE below that.
I WILL get them on the dry

March Brown Spiders, Partridge and Orange and Snipe and Purple as a default searching cast; any movement on the surface probably tan / grey klinkhamers unless I can see what's coming off.

cheers everyone so far

it looks like i have learned something in these last couple of months browsing this forum,
as my starting point seems not to be to far offbut i never give the dry's a thought, better start tying some klinks and dunns
its a good job theres still a little time left,as my aim is to catch on fly's that i have tied myself,
might be a bit ambitious i know, but i like to set myself challenges
if my camera is upto it i will post my flies in the fly tying section then you can let me know if i am making the right choice

cheers fime
