Default Fishing the Dabbler

I bought some pretty crappy dabblers last season but never used them.

I'm going to tie some up for the coming season and was looking for some tips on fishing them from a boat on wild Loch's.

Is a good wave the best conditions when you're getting blown about a bit.

I take it you want them in the surface layers ?

Any help appreciated.

I agree Black Don,a lot of dabbler,s for sale are **** far far too big and bulky. The wing is long enough when it is hafway between the bend of the hook and the end of the tail. There,s some cracking dabblers shown in the flytying section.Fishing a dabbler now at this time of year it would alway's be
an intermediate or wet cel 2 line for me.I would base my retreive on the wind and wave at the time,ie the faster the wind and wave the faster the pull.Pick a marker on the shore and watch how quickly the boat drift's past it in a good wind and wave then you should be able to judge the speed of your retreive. No point fishing slow in a fast drifting boat, your fly's will be dead in the water hope this help's,good luck.

Thank you,

Reply appreciated. It's nice to know Dabbler's are not just for when the water warms up.

So a fast glass line and a good old strip is the order of the day then.

As you have probably noticed BD, dabblers come in a vast array of colour combo's, not to mention differing styles and sizes. Asking how to fish a dabbler is a bit like asking how to fish lure...which lure? Think of it as a large family, rather than an individul pattern with a couple of variants. They can vary from a sparse, nymphy affair, to a full blown attention seeker for the top dropper. Add an infinate variety of tinsels, seals furs, dubbings, hackles etc to the mix, and you have something for every occasion. Pick your pattern well, match your retrieve to the style of the dressing and the conditions, and let that irresistable dabbler profile do the rest.

Got a bit more to add for you BD.... gotta split for now though.

Thank's Scratch,

I appreciate your reply.

I'm really going to have to get onto the tying bench, look at the pattern's on here and give them a try next season.

ATB and thankyou M8.
