Default rod snobbery

hi, just been in a tackle shop today to look for a new rod. roll on end of month!

i told him my budget of around £170 for a 10' reservoir rod. he showed me a few and said "this budget of rods are good for beginers or second stage anglers"!
insinuating that i or the rods were not up to the task, and that you have to spend a lot more to get something good??!!
he then tried to back pedal as my face must of changed a bit.
i wanted to take him outside not to thump him but to challenge him to a casting contest, more like a duel
him with a sage me with the £170 bean pole. i know a full line when i see it.
(double tapers at dawn)
not a good way to speak to customers i think......

got it off my chest , thanks , dave

Yeah theresc a lot of snobery out there, I also Cycle, i read on a forum where a Cyclist buys all his gear from Aldis, then purchased assos labels on ebay sorted,
maybe we should try the same, is their a market out there for Sage Hardy and Loomis labels.

At that price range, a Greys Platinum XD 10ft for a 7 is a good rod for the money.

There are very few really bad rods these days, in any price range. You should get something pretty good, in terms of finish and performance for around £200.

What a twonk, but unfortunately it's not uncommon. I think these ShopSnobs are actually the victim of a brain-wasting disease. This disease is contracted when they stop actually fishing (if they ever did so in the first place) and start working for a fly shop. It then immediately becomes all about the gear.

I'd stop back in to the shop sometime and pick up a spool of tippet. Hopefully you'll run into Snob Boy and then you can casually mention you bought your rod from another store as the selection in his shop was inadequate.

You don't need to spend anywhere near £170 for a decent rod. I had a Sage XP 9' 7wt for grilse and suchlike which I sold when I won a Shakespeare Odyssey in a competition. For me, it is a far better tool for when I need it, as I usually fish a 9' 5wt or smaller on rivers most of the time. It cost me £300 and was no good sitting there not getting used as often as I would like. The Odyssey is far, far better value for money.

You don't need to waste your money in his shop either. Shop around and on the internet and you might get a good Sage for cheap enough.

Reminds me of the time I went into Sportfish (some years ago now) to 'browse' some reels as I was after a new 'un.
Sportfish employee comes over and ask if he can help. I tell him that I'm after a new reel 'but not too expensive'. His reply was to say 'Well, that depends on what you mean, some of our customers would consider £300 or £400 for a reel not expensive'.
No reply to that other than walk straight out.
(I suppose I could have smashed the shop windows and turned some doughnuts in the car park... You always think of these things later don't you.)

same happened to me but the guy was only joking! when I first walked into the orvis shop, I was expecting the staff to look down there sniffer at me If I didnt spend wads of cash. I shudnt have judged, the guys there were sorted, chattin to me like a normal person. Hence im a regular customer!

the only person in that shop who didnt apreciate me was some woman behind the tills watchin the money roll in whenever a toff entered the door. and guess what, she knew f*** all about fishing

What an absolute idiot. not only is he a snob, he's completely incorrect. £170 will get you all the rod you'll ever need.! At that price, can i implore you to try a Bloke 10' #7? you'll get change and you'll get to see that backing knot!
