Smile Fly Identifacation

HI yer
Is There anyway I can Identify my Flies in my Fly Box apart from numbering them on a Reference List until I gain the Knowledge to be
able to recognise them on sight. I appreciate that nobody knows all
the flies ever made, and that a lot of fisherman only know the Flies
that work on there specific River, Loch, Reservior, Etc and there is no
substitute for experience, The only time you,ll remember a fly is when
you,ve caught on it, then as human nature is you,ll always start with
that one. Sorry if I,ve Rambled on a bit.
Thanks Again
Steve.........

you have the names of the ones you bought why not visit one of the many online fly shops save the pic of the fly you bought to your hard drive and rename the pic of the fly to the correct name until you get used to them .you can at least easily tell by the pic
just a thought

Lots of sites that sell flies have pics of each one on their sites if you don't know what flies you have but numbering them and putting the names on paper seems a good idea at first and keep them in similar groups, wets, dries, nymphs ,weighted nymphs, buzzers etc and make sure they go back in same place but I'm thinking grouping them might be more important than actually knowing the names of each fly.....Make sure the paper doesn't get wet tho'..small laminated sheets might be best.

What Ive Done at the moment is cut the ID cards down and placed them in
My fly box with the flys.Alright this may seem a little bit strange but what
matters is the end result. There is no substitute for experience.

Trust me when I say I have the memory of a gold fish (you know 6 seconds) I know where you are coming from trying to remember names, I decided to go for fly tying lessons I have been fishing 3 yrs and tying for 2yrs and I am fairly confident i can now name a range of flies in different categories, e.g wets, dries, nymphs, emergers, lures I got that hooked pardon the pun that I even started reading books on entemology and the cycles of fly life. I found this to be very interesting and found ways to relate to remembering the flies. Now I dont worry having names as I have had some success tying my own patterns they are all called Goggsy's terminator hehehe!!!
