Default Any method at Hanningfield

Just been informed of this... good news for coarse anglers or bad news for the fly anglers? I wouldn't be too happy if Bewl did this but I know some coarse anglers that would be there like a shot.

Media release - Casting a wider net for all to enjoy

10/02/2009

Fishing opportunities at Hanningfield reservoir in Essex have been opened up to all this season to give more people a chance to get hooked on the sport.

A variety of methods to catch fish with a rod a line will be allowed this year on 600 acres of the reservoir near Chelmsford, which was previously only open to anglers daily who wanted to catch trout with a fly.

In addition to fishing with artificial flies other baits and methods being introduced this season are: worms, maggots, trout pellets, swim feeders (closed), artificial lures including spinners and spoons (successfully trialled last season) any other legal coarse fishing bait including paste attractors such as Powerbait and dead sea fish baits.

My carping buddies are having kittens at the thought of paying as much for their fishing as the trout anglers do. They claim they should pay less because they return their catch. Very exciting in any case. Now, what about Rutland?

I've read it that if they catch a trout they have to kill it Warren so in theory they will be taking some home. Also, they could get a limit of stockies in no time and then have to pack up the bivvy and go home after an hour's fishing. C+R is for the fly anglers only.
Cheers

Yes, as member of Hanningfield Fly Fishers, we were a bit horrified about this and its possible impact. Right now we have a Lexus heat and National Eliminators planned on the venue.

We have been assured that Northumbria Water do this on all their other waters with no detriment to the fly fishing which is why I posted last week asking for feedback from North East anglers.

They have also told us that if we pull the club out and the associated income, they will likely have to close it as a fishing venue at all. We will most likely fish it this year and see how it pans out but there is a meeting this weekend to discuss.

Wouldn't fancy a 4oz weight and a mackerel being fired out 180 yards towards me when I'm twiddling the nymphs back Charlie. Bl**dy dangerous especially when all the boats are out for a comp. What if the angler has a smash up on the cast?
Let us know how the meeting goes.
Cheers
Mike

Hi guys,

cant help thinking the pike boys will be mainly winter, whats the carp stock in hanningfield? have to be some lumps otherwise most will leave alone.

As for trout captures, cant help thinking they will be thrown back or smuggled awaygonna be difficult to police.

Be interesting to see what happens, Gonna have a bash myself this season.

I'm not aware of a lot of pike or carp in Hanningfield - certainly not like Grafham.

I think it will be mainly bait fishing for trout.

I'll keep you all posted.

And, what about all the diseases associated with fishing dead baits?

I cant believe they are allowing this, I have seldom seen a carp water with fairly clean water - it seems generally murk caused by the carp snouting around in the silt/mud (correct me if I am wrong, please)

rather shoddy behaviour indeed.

Thought they would have made enough money from us fly anglers.

Any ideas why, then, they are opening the waters to all method anglers?

Was looking forward to really giving the banks a good go this year after trying teh boats a few times last year (mixed success though)

cheers all

I can't see a problem, why's everyone so bothered? places like this should not be limited just to the fly.

There is supposed to be a small head of carp in Hanningfield. A such low stocks they are unlikely to cause any overturn of bottom sediments that would be detrimental to water quality. I would love to fish a low stock reservoir for carp. Then I could give them all names!
