Default double haul

Just as a matter of interest how many of you out there can double haul,as i hardly ever see anyone doing it .Is it maybe because people think its hard to learn or do they just not know about it,the answer i normally get when teaching is oh i couldnt do that, anglers would be amazed at how this can help put a good line out

I can do it, probably pretty poorly, but it works for me. It's almost a necessity when I'm pitching big deer hair bass flies in any kind of wind. Also very handy if you fish the big western US rivers like the Bighorn where there's always a wind and you have to chuck big shot and nymph rigs.

A friend taught me the basics. It takes practice to get the timing right, though. I probably spent 4 or 5 evenings of lawn casting making a complete hash of it before I could do it with at least some measure of consistency. It takes a while to get back into it after I haven't done it over the winter or whatever. Maybe that's just my lack of coordination or maybe that's the reason you don't see many people using it? Pretty easy to pick up, but you use it or lose it if you don't practice?

I pretty much double haul all the time. Most of my fly fishing is for Pike so hauling is an integrial part of it all.

I will double haul when out with my 3 weight though..if I need the distance or want to punch a tight loop into the wind, otherwise its a single haul...with a wee second haul in there..old habits and all that

Personal preference is to use it nearly all the time. It is useful even at very short distances in keeping the number of false casts down. It speeds up the fly and dries it out more rapidly than just casting.

It's very easy to learn. All it takes is good instruction and some basic co-ordination and timing.

I have cast with guys who have cast 80ft + without hauling, but if you are going for any distance, the double haul is essential to maintain high line speed and keep the line in the air.

In my opinion, its pretty essential, if you're going to be a competent caster.

Been practising my double haul in the back garden today. I initally struggled with the timing of when to pull down on the forward cast - but it's getting better. I reckon it's just practice!!

The key to me seems to be judging when the line has 'loaded up'' on the back cast. If I don't feel a slight pull up on the line, I make a total mess of the cast.

if im holding line in my left hand i think i'd struggle not to haul, sometimes the left hand is doing more work than the right.

I double haul on every cast, I cant help it! even on a ten yard cast, I may not cast the full line every time but I notice other anglers making several backcasts to my one to get the same distance. Just a roll cast, one back cast and shoot! My key is the same as Fordy, make sure the back cast extends fully.
