Thumbs up What Setup

Hi
Would like some advice with my first veture into fishing droppers. Let me first
say that I only took up Fly Fishing in the middle of last summer. I wil ( from
May) be fishing the lochs on Dunnet Head, Watten, Heilan, and St Johns Loch
basically from Wick upto John O,groates. The Lochs on Dunnet Head (9) are
mainly shallow and have a dark peaty bottom, Watten and Ithink Heilan are
a bit more chalky and obviously bigger. I will be Fishing with a Orvis Wilderness 2 10ft 6wt with a Orvis Clearwater reel loaded with Orvis HY-FLOTE EXTRA WF-6-F Line a 5ft airflo polyleader slow sinking leader and will
be useing (depending on the weather) 2x (11lb) or 3x (8lb) Tippet. What tippet length, Fly configeration, (1or2or3 ) should I start with, oh I Forgot
to mention it,s Brownies I,m after. Please accept my apologies if I have,nt
got the terminology right regarding materials and configerations but like I
said I,m a complete beginner. Iwould just like to say that so far I,ve been
overwelmed by the help and advice I have received so far from the forum
especially Pitsford Pirate. Many Thanks

Steve...........

You might want to think of using a 6lb leader and make it 12' long and put a dropper 5' from your point fly
11lb is way to heavy.
That is a very simple setup but should not cause you to many tangles
don't put on the polyleader if the fish are in the surface.and it would be worth your while getting a 5' clear intermidiate polyleader. For when the fish are just sub-surface.

Great destination great lochs.

hope that is of help.

Jim

you need to check the diameter of your leader - as Jim points out 11lb may be too heavy although if it is one of the low diameter sorts then it may not be too bad either. For your first attempts with droppers I would fish fairly heavy as this will help to reduce tangles and perhaps start with 2 flies before moving on to 3.

I can only mirror what Jim says, really.

Use 1 dropper as you will get less tangles this way.

Also make the dropper a decent length. I like to start off with about 10" as this will give you 3 decent fly changes atleast before the dropper becomes too short to fish with.

As for your fly configuration. The best way will be to ask someone at the time whats catching but if you have a good selection of buzzers (black, olive being 2 of the best colours) a few bloodworms (apps(rubber legs), marabou tail) and some diawl bachs then you should have a good head start.

As has been said, 11lb leader will be too much I think.. Id stick with 5 or 6lb.

Leader length, I would go with what you can handle. At least the length of your rod is a good way to start/ judge. 10 - 12ft would be ideal.

Have the dropper 4 or 5ft above the point.

You never mentioned using a strike indicator. I dont know if you have thought about it or not but its a great way to get used to nymphing. I am newish to it and I find using one helps with my confidence, concentration and it also helps with detecting the suptlest of takes too.
