Default Salt in the Wound?

Should we be concerned about the huge amount of salt that is being spread on our roads? It follows that it may all end up in the streams and rivers therefore adding to the problem of polution. Please tell me I have no need to worry, that the salt will disappear and do no harm.
Rod.
