Default More questions (sorry)

Around this time of year we normally see fish with white(saprolegnia) on them not many but a couple, but this year I havent seen any which surprises me as Id expect a couple.
Seen a couple dead which I put down to bad catch and release (thats another hot topic) and is expected, but none with the old sparolegnia on them swimming about.
I have a couple of thoughts, having done some things different this year which may offer a reason and wondered if anyone has seen any around in the waters you have fished.Dont want to know the names of the waters but its more to find out the reasons for it this year and could help waters in the future years.

I suprises me too, as the water has been cold and this fungus is temperature related prefering lower temperatues. Any morts we see at this time of the year always have a nasty spike mark in the top of the back, in front of the dorsal, but as you say, thats another story. We used to treat saprolegnia before we saw it with a pellet called 'Response' from Skretting. It has lots of vit C and a derivitve of mushrooms included and it is fed before any predicted stress event such as spawning or grading in cold weather. With the days drawing out and the sun getting warmer (you know what I mean) it looks like you might get off without any trouble at all. Perhaps, as saprolegnia is secondary, the fish might not have so many leeches or argulus. Populations of these parasites can be high some years and low during other winters.

Up at Burnhouse there are normally somel fish swimming about with fungus in the winter (and also some dead fish) but this year there appears to be far fewer.
