Default Single-handed salmon rod size

I just bought a new single-handed salmon rod, a 10' #8. I was just wondering what the board's view is vis a vis the ideal size for a single-handed salmon rod? I swithered between a 9' and 10' and #7 and #8 rod.

10ft gives you a bit more line control and is good for reaching out over bankside vegetation.

It can be a bit more tiring on the wrist after a days casting, compared to a 9ft rod.

Good choice in my opinion, as an 8 is good in wind and with sink tips and larger flies.

What rod is it?

I'll append this question here instead of opening a new thread (and clogging up the forum more than I already have), but what doublle-handed rod size would y'all recommend for the Findform? I was thinking a 13' #8/9, but also a 12'6" #7/8.
Thanks in advance.

I would go for the 13' 8/9# but I have both sizes.

This is probably a difficult question to answer, 3lbgrayling, but how much distance would one sacrifice by opting for the smaller of those two rod sizes? The 12'6" appeals to me slightly more, but the 13' might be that bit more versatile.

you would not sacrifice any distance. It's as you say just a tiny bit more versitile IMHO.

what factors dictate wether you use a single or double handed rod? from what little i have gathered about migratory species, i seem to get the idea that single handers are more popular in the sea trout camp, and double handers to the salmon fishers. is this due to the size of fish?

The advice I've been given from a variety of people is to get a double-handed rod because playing a large fish on a single-handed rod is that bit more difficult. (I made sure that my single-handed rod came with a fighting butt to partially address this problem.)
