Default Flying with rods...

Hi there!

Well, I was convinced that everyone is able to carry a travel rod with his hand luggagge on the plane, but I was reading today some information about security in the European airports, and I've found that fishing rods were forbidden, as well as much other sport items.

Has anyone experienced any problems when travelling with fly rods? Because if you must check in every rods, thats quite shitty isn't it? At least 4 pieces or more rods, should be fine for the plane... gosh, they must be afraid of hijacking the plane with the fishing rod!

I prefer a broom stick but the air hostesses wear really odd pointy hats?

Pack them in your Hold Baggage..it just isn't worth the hastle of trying to get them into the cabin. Same with reels with lines on them...you might get them on or you might not..it just depends on the attitude of the Security bod on the desk.

So that's what you get up to is it Roy.
Tie everyone up with a WF/#5 and whip them into submission with a ZXL.
What is the world coming too.

The problem is that the enforcement is highly variable these days and as Roy says, it's just not worth the hassle. Just check everything and be done with it. You can't take the rods, reels are questionable, lines are iffy as well, and unless you'd like an encounter with Officer Strangeglove, don't even think of arguing with security.

Flies too, just pack them all in your hold bagage.

This is one reason I try to fly direct if going fishing, much less chance of loosing luggage than on a flight where you ( and your luggage ) have to tranfer.

Default Flying with rods

Had a year of it last year.

Could happily fly between Dubai and London Heathrow on Emirates, BA or Etihad with rod(s) carried on as hand luggage. Did this a total of 8 times throughout the year without anyone batting an eyelid either at check in or whilst going through security.

Then tried flying from Stansted or B'ham to Knock (Ireland West) and apparently fishing rods are classified as 'prohibited items' as defined by the EU.

According to one friendly security guard - it has been known for people to sharpen the section ends and use them as an offensive weapon!

As a slight aside, for anyone flying Ryanair, it's worth mentioning that they have doubled their charges for carrying sports equipment, which includes fishing rods, as checked luggage. This will add £60 to the cost of your return flight if you take a separate rod tube. A fair argument for getting a travel rod that will fit into a conventional bag!

Why don`t you just package everything up and post it to your destination got
to be cheaper than paying eg ryanair £60 for sports equipment RIPOFF!!!!
I have done this a few times with no problems

I bought a Fishpond roller duffel.

In the base section there are two zipped, sleeved compartments for rod tubes ( 4 piece, 9ft) and sufficient room to accomodate chest waders, boots and fishing vest. This base section is ventilated and separated from the main body of the bag by a neoprene barrier. Each section can be locked using a flight approved combination padlock.

It's one of the best bits of fishing kit I've bought.
