Default Traditional v Modern

I was at Temple fishery today and started with my usual nymph set up, not a touch.
So on goes a blob in front of my grhe and damsel and let the lot hit the bottom and twitch back slowly, bang fish on, took my 3 fish and gave my rod to my mate as he had forgotten his sinker, who then bagged up.

Another angler came over and asked what we were using, and I offered him a blob the same as I had been using. Thats not fly fishing he said! and walked off.
Later he came up from the lake to the hut where we were having a coffee, no fish and mumbling there were no fish in there.

Should he have given in to the power of the blob, like I have? or was he right to stick to his very traditional but unproductive style.

It depends on how badly you want to catch a fish - horses for courses.

Its up to him , you demonstrated fish were there and how to catch them. The one thing he has no right to say is "there,s no fish in here" If you want to be traditional do so but dont moan!

With all this climate change around buzzer hatches last season seemed to be few and far between. Members in my club sometimes struggled to catch fish with nymphs and buzzers and because it is a club competition if you don't try other methods you may end up not catching. Remember what happened to the Dinosaurs.

MM,
He has actually done guys like me a great favour. Whenever I blank when others are catching, I have always assumed that it was my lack of experience or ability. Now I know it is really their fault for catching when 'not flyfishing'.

Then again maybe he was just an a$$.

If he wanted to stick to his favourite/traditional methods then fair play to him. Where he has made an **** of himself is to then suggest that there are no fish in the lake because his methods didn't work.
Age old arguement of how much of your enjoyment is made up of actually catching fish as opposed to trying to catch them. There is a strange mentality with some fishermen between success and snobbish failure.

The man was a muppet. The fish were clearly down and flogging a diawl bach would end in a blank.

The same thing happened to me at Lechlade last year, i invited my uncle, a devout traditionalist who insisted on fishing March Browns, bibios etc despite my protestations that he should be using marabou tailed damsels..! end result was 2 fish to the damsels, and nothing to the traditionals.. horses for courses, but surely a decent fisherman needs to adapt to the conditions.!

I would also consider myself a traditionalist. The man is not a muppet the man is demonstrating a respect for the sport and and an ability to enjoy a sport with self imposed rules.

I think that this heads of towards the discussion is "fly fishing" just about catching fish using any method. Or is it a sport that has self imposed rules and behaviours. For me the use of bungs and blobs is not fly fishing its Angling but not in the spirit of fly fishing. Personally I think the use of bungs etc is no different to a coarse angler fishing artificial sweetcorn under a float and that wouldnt be allowed on most trout waters. Already the line defining fly fishing to the rest of the sport is blurred beyond reason.

I do not criticise others for wishing to do it. But lets stop calling what they are doing fly fishing.
