Default Setting up a pike fly rod.

Can anyone tell me whats the best way to setup a pike fly rod? Here is what i have been using.

4ft 24lb mono nail knotted to the fly line.
4ft poly leader loop to loop with 24lb mono
2 1/2ft trace attached to the polyleader

The poly leader helps the fly turn over and the thickness of it help gets the flies the right distances.

Any other methods?

There's plenty on this in the 'Fly Fishing For Other Species' area of the forum (be prepared to get into the 'Mono V's Wire debate...).
My preference is for a heavy tapered leader cut down to 4' with 1' foot of mono attached by a loop to loop then tied to 1' of wire via an Albright knot. Wire attached to a snap link (best you can find) with a blood knot sealed with super glue. Attach fly to snap link.
If you're casting heavy pike streamers then a shorter total leader length will probably help getting the fly swimming properly shortly after the cast. Most pike don't seem to be too 'leader shy'.
A softish rod and an aggressive front taper line will also help.

The PFFA line... look at their website... join it... only a Tenner £GBP... invaluable.

My set ups....

Ron Thompson MPX Pike 8/9#

Harrison Advanced Rods 9/10# Pike and SWFF

on both of these I use a leader of 15lb Carp MemorX (no taper) of 3 or 4 ft (perfection loop for loop to loop), then grinner to it to 1ft to 18inches of 20lb Cannelle Supratress (braided steel) and to that a 3inch Ad Swier spiral lock (best way of attaching a pike fly)....

Job done
