It all depends on the fish, conditions and what you are trying to achieve.
When fishing the washing line, often the most important nymph is the one closest to the booby. (fish are attracted to the disturbance the booby causes then take the nymph closest to the booby)
Also this can occur when fishing the Bung -fish are attracted to the disturbance or sillouette of the bung and take the nymph closest.
I have in some instances fished a nymph 2.5ft from the bung or booby...although usually it is a size 12 nymph.
For Lure fishing I still prefere 6ft to my top dropper, then 7ft to middle dropper then 10ft to my point.....(long handled net required)
Or if it's very windy and I'm pulling just 2 flies 6ft to the top dropper and 16ft to the point
No hard and fast rules, just depends upon the conditions and angling pressure the fish have recieved.
