Theyr'e starving and the pebbles look like pellets. or at least food items.

Pebbles are stoneflies waiting to hatch. Fish eat all sorts of junk sometimes, especially when bottomfeeding. It could be they mistook them for pellets like Jim says, or they just hoovered them up accidentally with some real food - the real food will have digested and the pebbles are still sat there.

Jim ~ Im going to have to disagree with you at least on the starving i fish Wellsfield often, its got more biodiversity than many other waters locally, its stuffed full of sticklebacks often inches from the shore (probably trying to dodge the bows) Full to bursting with snails many types sizes, water boatman, geat diving beetles, caddis tubes crawling along loads of hog lice, shrimp, nymphs plus tons of other stuff a very healthy sign

I normally do best there fishing small imatations diawl bach, hares ears, buzzers, mostly size 12,14, very, very, really fish lures.

I always look at the gut of the fish i catch, at wellsfield often snails BIG snails ! lots of sticklebacks, buzzers, all manner of mashed up stuff along with stones im sure there rooting about eating caddis tube etc .......or they mistake them for snails i caught fish there with a good heaped handful of snails and 1/2" snails at that

A wee note i was told trout eat only "wee" stickle backs and then take them head first (to flatten spines ?) My father caught a 1.5lb brownie there (his first fish on the fly) it had at least 6 large whole stickleback taken tail first and a load more half digested

This is not uncommon in rainbows from a local water that I fish. I put it down to the pebbles being taken for snails, there are a lot of snails in this particular water. I'm not sure if this is correct but it's all I can think of...........................birdsnest

I'm sure I read somewhere that they take the pebbles to grind up the snail shells, much like grit in a birds crop.
