They will all catch fish at certain times of the year and fished a certain way, knowing when and how is the hard bit and takes a lot of trial and error or a lot of research. Asking questions here is a good start, then buy yourself a few fly fishing books, and also talk to fellow anglers that you meet bankside.
Dont be afraid to ask questions and dont be afraid to blank.

You can catch fish on all of those flies, but some will be more suitable to some waters than others. broadly speaking those on the right of the picture are dry flies which float and will be good for rivers and occasional lake use, while the ones on the left are wet flies/nymphs with a couple of lures on the bottom left of the picture. depending on where you fish, you should use different flies...

Spot on BB. A couple of BN's favourites amongst them (LH side) my old friends bibio and Kate Mclaren......taken a few brownies on them. And a couple of coch-y-bondhus on the right if I am not mistaken.....the rainbows love 'em in one of my local waters, take them for snails I think................birdsnest

Kate Mclaren on the point , bibio on the top dropper , more than enough for most stillwaters...

I'm trying to work out if the one which is top left is a very small black spider; or a piece of fluff ...

Do try and read some of the current trout fishing magazines for advice on what flies work well at different times of the year and for different waters.
But don't get hung up on too much on selecting the right fly. Yes, it can make a difference. But it's much more important to make sure you know the fly is fishing at the right depth and in the right way. So concentrate on your casting, leaders and retrieves and you'll soon have that first trout on the bank.
Tight lines for 2009
