Default Lake District - Mountain Tarns

Hi All

Are there any members here that would like to participate in a discussion about fish, and fishing in the mountain tarns of the Lake District?

Perhaps we could jointly look at what we know and what we don't, perhaps we could even have a look at what we could do as members of the Forum in 2009 to improve our combined knowledge/pleasure of these remote waters.

I have a database partly populated with information (which may help as a foundation) but others may have a better one. It would be good to get it verified, updated and added to. It includes information on depth, species, rights to fish etc.

Anyone?

SAB

Thumbs up Tarns

Hi

I'd be very interested in a discussion on this topic. As someone who has spent much of their free time in the lakes, and have recently returned to the gentle art of fly fishing, my aim next season is to combine the two more closely. (Used to fish the wee lochans in NW Scotland & Isles as a teenager, as well as some of the Lake District waters).
Whilst I may not be able to contribute significant new data right now, I’d hope to be able to provide some “on the ground” reports as the season progresses.
Cheers
Dave.

Good idea Stew, I have a little knowledge.
Our old mate TC is a wealth of knowledge, just wait until he sees this thread
he will be in his element.

So would it be true to say that Terry Cousin is the foremost authority on the subject or have others researched and gained equal or greater knowledge?

Anyway, how did the fish get there?, do they have legs or is it because of something like a Noah type flood?

Count me in SAB. I've fished a lot of them and as a one time geography graduate at Lancaster Uni, I've got quite a lot of info re geology, formation, depth, strata, flora and fauna etc etc.

More later.....

Maybe some of you would like to see how many of them you can walk to and fish, and to what effect, during the Cumbrian festival of fishing starting on May 16th.

More on the event in due course, but I did jot down the words 'high tarns drifter' as a challenge for those participating in the event. (NB I might have seen those words before - they sound like the name of a Jon Beer article for T&S)

A good source book - John Watson's 'Lake District Fisheries' pub 1899. not that rare. Check bookfinder.com (I think).

On TC's recommendation I tracked down a second hand copy of "Exploring Lakeland Tarns" by Don Blair ("tracked down" in the sense of typing it into Google and finding a copy on Amazon) Absolutely crammed full of such info, brilliant. Of course the problem with discussing all the little hidden secrets in full view would mean they wouldn't be hidden secrets any more Can't contribute much myself I'm afraid as I haven't got to grips with them yet - just some of the rivers and a few of the Lakes. Now my lad's a bit older though I might pack the tent and do a hill walk/tarn-fish/camp out thing with him this summer, we'll see.

I'm also interested in combining some hillwalking and fishing but being a novice based in London I doubt I can contribute much with only sporadic visits. When i looked into it I found a few webpages of use http://www.lakedistrictfishing.net/ and select The High Fell Tarns on the left for some info on the larger hill tarns.

Cheers

Roger

I shouldn't worry too much Jeff. I doubt there are that many of us with a yen to combine their mountaincraft with flyfishing, even if all was revealed on the front page of the angling press!

Our sport is made up of people from many different walks of life, and inevitably there will remain a high percentage who a happy to stay near their cars at a cosy stillwater in the lowlands somewhere.
