Default cutting down a long belly fly line??

We have a long belly fly line that a mid-tip soft rod struggles to throw.

question then; could one cut down the head length to make it more a WF line or would this totally destroy the profile?

many thanks for any forthcoming responses

Cheers Buzz!

Now, really stupid question, but I assume we are talking about cutting it down from the tip backwards?

4inches or 4feet at a time?

Remember, if you are cutting off the tip, you are defeating the object as far as a tapered line is concerned. Could you not arrange a swap? I am presuming you are working with a decent line. If you have to cut up your line, have you considered making it a shooting-head? Cheers TC

Just like a fine suit some things are made to measure
Just to explain out of necessity i have to use a very long leader, some fly lines dont turn over the leader so a bit of DIY is needed.
Most fly lines have different tapers and other qualities (colour, floatablity etc).
The perfect line for me would be WF with a very long belly and an aggressive front taper so on some lines i simply cut off a portion of the front taper to suit my needs. Just make sure you super glue the end before attaching the nail knot or braided loop otherwise water will penetrate the core and you will have a sinker.

Thank chaps

It is/was a Pirate line so whilst not costing a bomb it was also not an 'el-cheapo' so to speak.

I prefer an aggresive WF front taper so that I can really feel the line pull out through the rings but (although not my line) with this one it seems rather sluggish even having been cleaned and Snowbee line slick applied too.

I feel that the line has a long belly and with the rod being a slow action it just cant seem to handle holding the line up until most of the belly is out enough to let it fly.

If the above makes sense

I wouldn't recommend chopping this line down, it will ruin it.

Its long belly design is for a reason, so it can be arialised somewhat.

It would better suit a faster rod, or a more proficient caster.

Your friend could look at dropping a line weight for his softer rod, or a shorter bellied line, look at the Barrio maybe.
