Thumbs up The Gray's Loop

Just wanted to make a quick post to say thanks to John Gray for posting the how to for this knot on his website and sharing it with everybody. I have used his loop to make a nylon loop on the end of my fly line in place of using a braided loop and cannot fault it! I'd recommend the loop and also the needle version he has, but i didn't have a small enough needle nor was i brave enough!

Thanks John!

The loop can be found here: http://www.trout-salmon-fishing.com/..._Fly_line_loop

I did the needle version on a 5wt line on Christmas Day after a glass or two. First attempt I held the needle in the flame too long and melted the end of the fly line. Only a few millimetres so no big deal. I found it fiddly to thread both ends of the mono at once but managed one at a time. To keep the loop as small as possible I used the clip of a pen lid to prevent the mono pulling through the fly line. The loop gets bigger as you tighten the knot up.

I tested it by looping it over a washing line hook on the garden fence and pulled as hard as I dared plus I have landed a few fish and hooked a few rocks, trees etc. and it has held firm so far. I think I'd trust the needle version over the clinched one.

Much neater than a braided loop IMHO, less wake on the retrieve, turnover seems just as good, maybe better. Cheaper than chips. Hats off to Mr Gray and his wonderful loop!

I've just put the clinch version of the loop on two 8# lines for swff. I used 15lb fluoro (didn't have any mono). Would fluoro be any weaker than mono?

quoted from the greys website
This knot is not suitable for fly lines with a kevlar or monofilament core. The fly line must have a hollow braided core, as in most traditional PVC fly lines.

so would this be ok to use on
cortland 444 classic camo intermediate
snowbee xs floating
partridge reservoir sinking line

thanks

Talking

weaker how?

15lb flouro funnily enough will break at pretty much the same strain as 15lb mono...

Main things to know about mono is theres much less stretch, it tends to be much stiffer, tends to sink like a stone, will be thicker diameter for the same breaking strain vs mono, can be tougher to use mono knots (due to thickness and stiffness)

Big positives tend to be more abrasion resistant, and good refractive index. I tend to only really use it when fishing for chub/barbel in gin clear water conditions.
