I recently bought feltsole boot myself and after advice from several other anglers went for 5 studs in each heel, patter looks like the 5 on a dice. I was told to refrain from putting them in the sole as this could make them slippy on rocky bottoms thus defeating the purpose of the felt soles.
I havent tried them out yet, first outing on the 15th on the Tay, so lets hope it was sound advice.

I've certainly got studs on the soles and heels of mine - don't think I'd like the soles to be .......... naked!

Studding the soles of felt boots is quite easy to get right and quite easy to get wrong!

First thing to check is that the thread on the studs are not longer than the thickness of the felt - obvious one that innit?

I use 8 on the heel about 3/8" in from the edge and another 7 on the sole about 1/2" in from the edge. Don't put any under the center area of the ball of the foot as you will not be very comfortable and your boots won't last very long either!

I fish the Liffey and it varies in bottom composition and have no problems with this set up, mud on the banking is a different story!

OOPS ! I had to check and as they say a picture is worth a thousand words! This set up works for me.

Similar to Roddy, three on the heel at the back, and three on the toe, to assist climbing from water onto a muddy bank, or grass.
Yet to find out if it works. But loads of studs left if it doesn't.

I've done the same as mrtrout, on his advice, so I can blame him if it doesn't work. On the other hand, it could be an elaborate ruse so he can see me flat on my ass in the mud

I don't remember advising you Jeff, honestly.
I was waiting for you to come on as I wanted to know what you had done.
Anyway, we've both got loads of studs to play with.
If you fall on your ass, I will always help you up, you know that.
When I have finished laughing that is.

Mr trout is 100% correct, put some in the heel and toe as these are the area's that slip when in contact with wet grass, and these are the areas where you need grip getting in and out of the river. Never put any in the centre of the sole as this will stop the felt making contact with any rock you're standing on, which makes having a felt sole for wet rock completely pointless, and potentially dangerous.

I have always used boot-foot waders, rather than stocking-foot + boots, so have never put any studs in the sole felts as there is a possibility of puncturing the PVC.
I just add four or five studs to the heel and find that this gives enough grip on slippery surfaces - you soon get used to digging your heels into slippery grass or clay banks!
The screw in types wear pretty quick if you do a bit of walking on hard surfaces so it pays to replace them every season or so.

Dave.
