Default tippit or no tippit

how many of you use a tippit ?
ive been fishing the fly now for two months and just use a length of leader on my floating line to the required depth i want to fish at 10 or 5 ft . i put a snap hook on (great for quick fly change in this cold weather) then my fly and been doing pretty fine . just ask as ive been watching a few dvds and a tippit seems to be the norm ? whats your advice
cheers

tippets are used on tapered leaders which will aid the turn over of the fly and on rivers this is a definite must for presentation and also on still-waters when fishing top of the water ,the only way to find out is to try a tapered leader from the local tackle shop and see what difference it makes for you cast and presentation then make your mind up....

sorry flyman for sounding thick but are you suggesting get a tapered knotless leader and try that on its own or get a tapered leader and add say a two foot tippet to the end of lesser breaking strain than end of tapered leader
thanks

Get a tapered leader and add a couple of feet of tippet to it.

You add the tippet (material and b.s. of your choice, lesser b.s. than the end of your leader, which should help turnover even more) to the end of your knotless tapered leader to prevent the tapered leader getting shorter everytime you change flies. It lets you keep your "expensive" leader intact!

cheers for that as for loosing length by changing flies i dont have that problem too much unless i need to change my snap hook for some reason but would you just tie tippet to leader by creating a loop to loop , 3 turn overhand loop or what about them little o rings ?
thanks

I've just purchased some tippet rings, i bought them from sportfish and they're only 1mm in diameter, they are absolutely tiny! I'd recommend them, although i haven't fished with them yet! You just tie the leader onto one then tie your tippet to that.

If not using them, you could tie the tippet on using any knot you wish. You would just replace the tippet as neccessary.

I was never shown the tippet idea by my instructor, but after watching others I now use one as well. I tend to just use a 4 turn water knot to connect it, then throw the leader away at the end of the session.
