Default Hook sharpeners

Just bought one (the one with the v-groove cut in it). Can not seem to get a good sharp point on the hooks. Am i not using it properly or are they rubbish?

I've got one of those things and liker you, I never seem to improve the point.

So I don't bother and to be honest, I don't think I lose that many fish by not bothering to sharpen them.

hello,i personally prefer to carry a diamond nail file ,which you can get all around the hook point ,i use this for both my game and coarse hooks !!

If you are referring to the EZE-lap, I use it very successfully and would never be without it. Modern hooks are very sharp but the point goes over easily and I often sharpen my hooks before and during use. I run the hook point down the groove with the motion in the direction of the bend.

Wouldn't think so after losing all those fish on Saturday, eh Roy ?

Just to clarify, do you try to sharpen all the sides of the point or just along the one plane?

I'd advise sharpening both flanks and the underside, by drawing the point towards you, like Charlie recommends. You will end up with a slightly more triangular point, but that is hard to avoid without repeatedly repositioning your grip on what is a small and fiddly item. TC
